Magento SEO for large catalogs and multi-store setups
Search engine optimization for Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce, from layered navigation and URL rewrites to store views, caching and catalog content.
Magento SEO: what it covers
Magento is built for big catalogs, many store views and complex pricing, and its SEO problems scale with it. Layered navigation can generate huge numbers of filter URLs, the URL rewrite table can fill with outdated paths after imports, and a product placed in several categories can be reachable at more than one address. On top of that, the default Luma frontend ships a lot of JavaScript, which makes mobile performance hard work.
BOOST STAR Experts helps Magento and Adobe Commerce merchants work through these issues in a planned order, starting with crawl control and indexing before moving on to content and links. Our remote team in India supports brands worldwide. You get one project lead by name, a written summary every week and calls arranged around your working day. We work alongside your developers or hosting partner where they own the code. If upkeep costs have you thinking about replatforming, a move to Shopify is one option we can review with you separately.
- Layered navigation crawl rules
- Canonical tags for products and categories
- Clean URL rewrites after imports
- hreflang across store views
- Full-page cache and Varnish checked
- XML sitemaps per store view
What Magento SEO has to get right
Layered navigation bloat
Every filterable attribute in layered navigation can add parameters to a category URL, and combinations multiply fast on a large catalog. Without clear rules, Google crawls filter pages instead of products, reports many URLs as crawled but not indexed, and spreads ranking signals across pages that should never have been discoverable.
URL rewrites and duplicate paths
Magento stores a rewrite for every product and category path. With the setting that adds category paths to product URLs, one product can exist at several addresses. Bulk imports, category moves and reindexing can create redirect chains or leave old rewrites behind, so the table needs regular review.
Store views and international setup
Separate store views for languages or countries are powerful, but Magento Open Source does not add hreflang tags out of the box. Mixed currencies, partly translated content and sitemaps that list the wrong store view leave search engines unsure which page belongs to which market.
Our Magento SEO services
Layered navigation strategy
We pick the filter combinations with real search demand, make them indexable with proper content, and manage the rest through canonicals, noindex and robots rules.
URL rewrite clean-up
We audit the rewrite table, fix redirect chains, set consistent canonical settings for products and categories, and plan redirects before category changes or imports.
Store view and hreflang setup
Correct hreflang between store views, a sitemap for each store, localized metadata and checks that each market sees the right currency and language.
Performance and caching
We review full-page cache hit rates, Varnish configuration, JavaScript bundling and image delivery, and work with your developers on Luma or Hyvä frontend fixes.
Structured data
Product, offer, breadcrumb and organization schema that matches what each store view displays, validated against Search Console enhancement reports.
Catalog content at scale
Templates and written copy for category pages, attribute-driven product descriptions and buying guides, so thousands of SKUs do not share the same thin text.

Frequently asked questions
Do you work on Magento 2 and Adobe Commerce?
Yes, we work on both Magento Open Source 2 and Adobe Commerce, including cloud-hosted Adobe Commerce. The SEO fundamentals are the same, while Adobe Commerce adds features such as content staging and B2B modules that change how pages are published and which ones should be indexed.
Should layered navigation pages be indexed?
Some should and most should not. A filter such as a brand or material within a category can match real searches and deserves its own optimized page. Combinations of size, price and sort order rarely do. We map search demand to filters before deciding, then configure indexing to match.
Will SEO changes slow down our development roadmap?
No, not if they are planned well. Many Magento SEO fixes are configuration changes in the admin, and the code changes are scoped as clear tickets your developers can schedule. We share priorities in writing each week, so SEO work fits around releases rather than competing with them.
Is Magento 1 still worth optimizing?
Usually not on its own. Magento 1 reached end of life in June 2020 and no longer receives official security patches, which is a bigger risk than any ranking issue. We can still protect your current rankings while you plan an upgrade, including redirect mapping for when the new site launches.
