Shopify experts for Netherlands brands

The Netherlands is one of Europe’s most mature eCommerce markets. Almost everyone shops online, delivery is fast and cheap, and shoppers are used to the service levels set by Bol and Coolblue: next-day delivery, free returns and clear communication. Payment is dominated by iDEAL, and a store that does not offer it will lose sales. Expectations are high, but so is the willingness to buy from new brands that get the basics right.

BOOST STAR Experts builds and grows Shopify stores for Dutch brands and for international brands launching in the Netherlands and Belgium. We set up iDEAL and other local payments, Dutch localisation, PostNL and DHL integrations and the legal pages Dutch consumers expect, then focus on SEO, paid campaigns and conversion work. The country’s position as a European logistics hub also makes it a natural base for selling across the EU.

Selling online in the Netherlands: what your store needs

iDEAL and local payment habits

iDEAL, which lets shoppers pay straight from their bank app, is the most used online payment method in the Netherlands. Cards are used less than in many countries. Buy-now-pay-later through Klarna or Riverty is common for fashion, and PayPal remains popular. We set up iDEAL through Shopify Payments alongside these options.

Dutch consumer law and VAT

Dutch online stores must show business details including their Chamber of Commerce (KvK) number, offer a 14-day withdrawal period and follow GDPR, known locally as the AVG. Prices must include VAT, which is 21% for most goods and 9% for items such as food and books. Selling across the EU usually means using the OSS VAT scheme.

Fast delivery and pickup points

PostNL and DHL deliver most parcels, with DPD, GLS and UPS as alternatives. Next-day delivery is standard, and many shoppers choose pickup points at local shops or parcel lockers. Showing order cut-off times, delivery days and free return options on product pages makes a clear difference to conversion.

Dutch language and Bol competition

Most Dutch people speak excellent English, but a Dutch storefront still converts better and builds trust. Bol is the dominant marketplace, so brand stores need clear reasons to buy direct, such as exclusive products, bundles or better service. Trustmarks such as Thuiswinkel Waarborg and visible reviews also help new brands earn confidence.

Frequently asked questions

Is iDEAL available on Shopify?

Yes. iDEAL is available through Shopify Payments for stores in the Netherlands and through several payment providers. We enable it, test it end to end and make sure it appears prominently at checkout, since many Dutch shoppers look for it first and will abandon a store that does not offer it.

Do I need a Dutch-language store if most Dutch people speak English?

For consumer sales, yes. English is widely understood, but shoppers trust and convert better on a Dutch storefront, and Dutch search terms drive most local search traffic. Shopify Markets lets you run Dutch and English versions on one store, with hreflang tags so each ranks in the right results.

Can you set up next-day delivery with PostNL or DHL?

Yes. We connect your store to PostNL or DHL through their Shopify apps or a shipping platform, set up delivery options and pickup points at checkout and show cut-off times on product pages. If you use a fulfilment partner, we connect their system so orders flow automatically.

How does working with a team in India fit Dutch business hours?

Our afternoon overlaps with your morning, so we schedule calls then. Updates are written up at the end of our day and waiting when you start yours. For launches we agree a timeline in advance so someone is available at the moments that matter.

Can you help us sell to Belgium as well?

Yes. Flemish shoppers are an easy extension for Dutch stores, and we can add a French-language version for Wallonia. We set up Bancontact, which Belgian shoppers expect, along with suitable shipping rates and localised content where Belgian Dutch differs from Netherlands Dutch.
