Shopify experts for Rwanda brands

Rwanda is a small country with a clear push towards digital services, and mobile money is part of daily life. Online shopping is growing in Kigali, where customers order groceries, fashion, electronics and gifts through websites, Instagram and WhatsApp. At the same time, a strong Made in Rwanda movement has produced coffee, tea, handwoven baskets, imigongo art and fashion labels with real appeal to buyers abroad, including the visitors who come for gorilla trekking and conferences.

BOOST STAR Experts builds Shopify stores for Rwandan brands selling at home and abroad. Locally, we set up mobile money and card payments, Kigali delivery zones and content in English and Kinyarwanda. For export, we create international storefronts with suitable payment and shipping setups. We also plan carefully around rules that affect online sellers, such as electronic invoicing and the ban on plastic bags.

Selling online in Rwanda: what your store needs

MTN MoMo, Airtel Money and cards

MTN MoMo is the most widely used payment method, followed by Airtel Money, and many shoppers in Kigali also have Visa or Mastercard debit cards. Local payment aggregators connect these methods to online stores. International gateways have limited support for Rwandan businesses, so we choose a provider that settles to your Rwandan bank account.

VAT, EBM receipts and data protection

Rwanda charges VAT at 18%, collected by the Rwanda Revenue Authority, and VAT-registered businesses must issue receipts through the electronic billing machine (EBM) system. The 2021 law on personal data protection and privacy sets rules for handling customer data. Shopify orders need to be reconciled with your EBM records.

Kigali delivery and plastic-free packaging

Most deliveries in Kigali are made by motorbike couriers or in-house riders, often the same day. Orders to other towns travel with bus and transport companies, and DHL Express handles international parcels. Rwanda bans plastic bags and most single-use plastics, so packaging must use paper, cloth or other permitted materials.

Languages, visitors and export buyers

Kinyarwanda is spoken by almost everyone, while English is the main language of business and French is still common. Social media, especially Instagram and WhatsApp, drives local discovery. Visitors and conference delegates discover Rwandan coffee, crafts and fashion during their stay, and many want to order again from home.

Frequently asked questions

Can customers pay with MTN MoMo on Shopify?

Yes, through a local payment aggregator that supports MoMo, Airtel Money and cards and offers an integration for online stores. Customers approve the payment on their phone, and the order updates automatically. Where an integration is not available, we set up a manual MoMo option with clear instructions.

How do Shopify orders fit with EBM receipts?

Shopify does not issue EBM receipts itself, so we set up order exports and reports that make it easy for your team or accountant to record sales in the EBM system. Where your EBM provider offers an integration, we can connect it so receipts are generated with less manual work.

Can we sell Rwandan coffee and crafts internationally?

Yes. We create international markets with prices in US dollars or euros, card payments through a provider that supports your business, and shipping by express carrier or through a partner abroad. Coffee and tea shipments must meet import rules in each destination, so we check those with you first.

Which languages should our store use?

English works for most online shoppers in Kigali and for export customers, and Kinyarwanda helps your store feel local and reach more people. We can add French for customers in neighbouring countries and Europe. Shopify supports multiple languages on one store with separate SEO for each.

How do you work with Rwandan brands from India?

We work remotely, 3.5 hours ahead of Rwanda, and do not have a local office. Calls happen in your morning, tasks are tracked on a shared board and every change is reviewed on a staging store before launch. Updates are written in English.
