Shopify experts for Uganda brands

Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world, and mobile money is how most people pay for almost everything. Online shopping is growing fastest in Kampala, where customers find products on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp and expect delivery by boda boda within hours. The country also produces goods with strong export appeal, including coffee, vanilla, shea butter and barkcloth, which gives Ugandan brands customers far beyond East Africa.

BOOST STAR Experts builds Shopify stores for Ugandan brands selling locally and abroad. We set up mobile money and card payments through gateways that operate in Uganda, delivery zones for Kampala and upcountry towns, English content with local touches and records that make tax reporting easier. For export brands, we build international storefronts with suitable payments, shipping and product information.

Selling online in Uganda: what your store needs

MTN MoMo, Airtel Money and gateways

MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money are used for most online payments, alongside Visa and Mastercard for a smaller group of shoppers. Payment gateways that operate in Uganda, such as Pesapal and Flutterwave, combine mobile money and cards and can connect to Shopify stores. Cash on delivery is still requested, especially for first orders.

VAT, EFRIS and data protection

Uganda charges VAT at 18%, collected by the Uganda Revenue Authority, and VAT-registered businesses must issue invoices and receipts through the EFRIS electronic system. The Data Protection and Privacy Act 2019 governs customer data. Shopify orders need to match your EFRIS records, so we set up exports and reports that help.

Boda boda delivery and upcountry orders

In Kampala, boda boda riders and delivery apps such as SafeBoda carry most orders, often the same day. Orders to Entebbe, Jinja, Mbarara or Gulu travel by bus parcel services or courier companies, and Posta Uganda covers postal delivery. DHL Express handles international parcels. Clear fees by area prevent disputes at delivery.

English, local languages and social selling

English is the main language of business and online shopping, while Luganda and other local languages make social content feel closer to customers. TikTok, Instagram and WhatsApp drive discovery and service, and buyers often want to chat before paying. Fashion, beauty, electronics and home products are popular online categories.

Frequently asked questions

Can Ugandan customers pay with mobile money on Shopify?

Yes. We connect a payment gateway that supports MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money, such as Pesapal or Flutterwave, depending on what suits your business. Customers approve payment on their phone and the order updates automatically. We test both networks with real transactions before launch.

Can Shopify work with EFRIS?

Shopify does not issue EFRIS receipts itself. We set up order exports and reports so your team or accountant can record sales in EFRIS quickly, and where your EFRIS provider or accounting software offers an integration, we connect it to reduce manual entry.

Can we sell Ugandan coffee or shea butter abroad?

Yes. We build international storefronts with prices in dollars, pounds or euros, card payments through a provider that supports your business and shipping by courier or through a partner abroad. Food and cosmetics must meet each destination’s import rules, which we plan around.

How do you set delivery fees for Kampala and upcountry?

We create delivery zones for Kampala areas, nearby towns such as Entebbe and Mukono, and upcountry regions, each with its own fee and delivery time. Customers see the correct fee at checkout, and upcountry orders can be marked for bus parcel dispatch.

How do you work with Ugandan clients from India?

Easily. India is only 2.5 hours ahead of Uganda, so we share most of your working day. We work remotely and do not have a local office, but calls, WhatsApp messages and fixes happen quickly, and every task is tracked on a shared board.
